The ultimate guide to contact lens care

Contact lenses offer a fantastic alternative to glasses.  They provide wearers numerous benefits, from enhancing special occasions to offering clear vision during sporting activities. However, to fully enjoy these advantages, it’s crucial to understand the importance of proper contact lens care. Neglecting this aspect could lead to corneal scratches, infections, and permanent vision loss. Let’s explore why correct care is essential and provide some handy tips for looking after your contact lenses.

Why Contact Lens Care Matters

Proper care for your contact lenses is crucial in safeguarding your precious eyes. Mishandling or improper storage of lenses can transform them into breeding grounds for harmful microorganisms and bacteria. These unwanted guests can trigger eye infections, resulting in discomfort.

That’s not all. Neglecting your lens care can lead to inflammation of the cornea, the outer layer of your eye. This can cause symptoms such as redness, pain, irritation and sensitivity to light. In extreme situations, this can lead to ulcers, scarring, and permanent vision loss.

Handling Your Contact Lenses

When it comes to contact lens safety, there’s more than just keeping your lenses clean. First and foremost, listen to your eyes and give them a break if you notice any redness or irritation.  Don’t forget to check the contact lens expiration date, as lenses shouldn’t be used past this date.

Cleanliness is crucial, so wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling lenses. Lastly, keep your lenses away from water to reduce exposure to harmful bacteria.  This includes swimming, showering and hot tubs.

Routine  Contact Lens Care

Daily disposable lenses are designed to be worn once and thrown away after use. However, reusable lenses such as two week or monthly lenses require a care routine to ensure the lenses stay in good condition and your eyes remain healthy. For reusable lenses, follow this step-by-step routine for how to take care of your contacts:

1. Wash and dry your hands before removing lenses.

2. Do not sleep in your lenses.

3. Place the lens in your palm, add a drop of the recommended contact lens solution and rub for 30 seconds. Flip and repeat.

4. Rinse the lens using contact lens solution to wash away germs or dirt.

5. Place the lens in the case, fill with solution and seal tightly.

6. Repeat for the other lens.

Ensure the contact lens case is cleaned daily and let it air dry.  Throw away the contact lens case every 2 months.
